Speaker: Maria Cecilia I. Ayson (Filipinas Heritage Library, The Philippines)

Moderator: Irfan R. Darajat (Archive and Information Records Management, Universitas Gadjah Mada)

What stories about identity, memory, and heritage can vintage records reveal? The sixth MUSEUM FORWARD 2025 masterclass explores how historic music collections shape national narratives and cultural understanding. Maria Cecilia Ayson (Head Librarian of the Archive Department at the Filipinas Heritage Library, Ayala Museum) oversees the Himig Collection of Filipinas Vintage Records, one of the Philippines’ most important early modern music archives. In this session, she will discuss how vintage record collections develop, what they tell us about national history and cultural identity, issues of provenance, and how the Himig Collection came into the Library’s care. She will also reflect on music preservation in Filipino society and draw connections to the Indonesian context, resonating with ongoing work at Galeri Lokananta.

This session will be in English.
